Easy DIY Volcano Experiment for Toddlers With 3 Ingredients
5 mins prep
If you’re looking for an easy at-home science activity for toddlers, this DIY volcano experiment is such a fun one to try. It only uses three simple ingredients you probably already have at home: baking soda, food coloring, and vinegar.
1 Place your small cup in the center of a large tray or baking sheet. I definitely recommend doing this activity over a tray because the volcano can overflow quickly once the reaction starts.
2 Cover the cup with aluminum foil, shaping the foil around the outside so it looks like a little volcano. Cut a hole in the top of the foil about the same size as the opening of the cup. Make sure the opening is large enough to easily add your ingredients.
3 Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda to the cup.
4 Next, add 4 to 6 drops of food coloring. Red or orange is fun if you want it to look more like lava, but any color works.
5 When you’re ready for the eruption, slowly pour in about 1/2 cup of white vinegar. The mixture will immediately start fizzing, bubbling, and overflowing out of your volcano.
